Murugan Idli Shop, Beasant Nagar

What makes an early morning walk on Beasant Nagar beach complete, and awesome? Breakfast at Murugan Idli shop. Sumptuous, mouth watering, delicacies of Madras that make you want to exercise self control and stop yourself from overeating.

Did not get to click a lot of photos as it was rush hour and I was busy drowning in my gastro delights.

When did I visit – the morning of August 27.

What did I have – Idli, Ghee Podi Idli, Plain Dosa, Sakkarai Pongal, Medhu Vada, Pongal, Coffee

What I loved – Everything. OK let me get into the details.

The mouth watering Sakkarai Pongal

Idli – so soft that I remembered the old adage. “Idlis as soft as jasmine flowers”. Truly the case here, wife and I kind of lost count on the number of idlis we had.

Ghee podi idly – Imagine ghee and superbly made ‘podi’ smeared on the above.

Plain dosa – good enough.

Medhu vada – not at all oily, perfectly crisp and the right size.

Sakkarai Pongal – right amount of jaggery, perfectly boiled rice.

Coffee – fresh and strong.

Special mention : tomato chutney with burnt pepper possibly, gave a very unique taste.

Service – very fast and very good, I was not aware of how the service worked at the rush hour. I asked one of the waiters and he quickly explained it to me without the snappiness of the rush hour in him.

Tip : Morning 8-9 seemed to be the peak rush hour with lot of waiting. You shouldn’t mind waiting. The waiters also go around with specialties of the day which you can keep taking, and not necessarily stick to an a la carte model where you order and wait. After 9 the rush greatly reduced and normal service seemed to resume.

Elma’s Bakery, Bar, and Kitchen – Hauz Khas, New Delhi

After a rather disastrous and disappointing meal at Parikrama, we looked forward to a good and wholesome meal on the last day of our Delhi trip. Wife’s friend, Bhavneet, who was taking us around, suggested we go to Elma’s at Hauz Khas village. For some reason, I kept thinking it was Elma’s until we reached the place. My newly married sister in law joined us and our group of four went out to make some gastronomic amends.

Elma’s Bakery, Bar and Restaurant, as they call themselves, are a quiet and quaint little place a little inside once you walk into Hauz Khas village. We took seats on the first floor, right next to the patisserie. The food menu was long and rather heavy, and I made a lame joke that we could do some serious damage with it if we got into a fight at the restaurant. Everyone ignored that and we placed our order. A cranberry cooler for self, iced coffee for wife, orange iced tea (!) for Bhavneet and cold coffee for SIL. Onion rings and a veg mezze platter were chosen to be the appetizers.

Drinks arrived fairly soon and looked exotic. They tasted excellent too – it’s been a while since i had a good cranberry drink. Onion rings were on the money – fresh and not too oily. The veg mezze platter was an all out winner – everybody loved the hummus and the falafel, the latter being was cooked to perfection. Wife said she detected soya bean in the falafel, couldn’t recognise. The dips and the pita bread were good enough.

Ladies all decided to have pasta – the Classic Genovese Pesto and a fresh vegetables (Exotic Vegetables) thin crust pizza. I did not try either, but guessed it was awesome because they cleaned it up even after claiming to be full from the earlier appetizers. I went for the Buff un burger, and was not disappointed. It was my second tenderloin burger after I had an amazing one on a trip to Vienna. The meat was succulent and the buns were perfect. They were neither too dry or too wet and stayed while I finished them off. The french fries played a suitable companion and I shared them with everyone.

We finished off with red velvet cake and a chocolate boat (for self) – the cake was good, but I did not see why the girls found it awesome, it had a slightly more cheesy coating than I have had before. The chocolate boat was nothing great, but then the entire experience was too good that the desserts didn’t matter.
